Let the people decide!

DIE LINKE chairperson Oskar Lafontaine comments the visit of German chancellor in Ireland:

We are following the current visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Dublin closely. Like a lot of other European politicians she will stress the position of the German government of the Lisbon-Treaty. There is logic behind this: she tries to campaign for her position in Ireland while neglecting at the same time the opportunity for German people to discuss and to vote on the EU-treaty. The German Left (DIE LINKE) stands for a democratic, social and peaceful Europe. We think the Lisbon-Treaty is not paving this way.

The Left welcomes the choice of the Irish people to use a referendum for deciding about its position on Europe’s future. This is true also for our demand in Germany: Let the people decide!
