A Great War is Imminent in Eastern Ukraine

“The government of Ukraine pursues enforced warfare around Donezk. The Ukrainian army is equipped with new weapons primarily delivered by the US. Additionally, special troops like the right-leaning volunteer battalions are employed. This military approach is aimed not only at provoking the insurgents but also at Russia to take military counter-actions. A great war at the Russian-Ukrainian border has to be prevented for all it is worth”, states Wolfgang Gehrke, vice chair of the faction DIE LINKE in Bundestag. He proceeds:

“During their meeting today, the EU foreign ministers should make it clear that the EU will not back another military escalation. But the EU member states are drifting ever further apart. By delivering weapons Obama and the US administration fuel the aggressive approach of the Ukrainian government. The US wants Ukraine to become a front-line state between Russia and the West in order to enforce their geostrategic interests in Europe and to avoid detente between Russia and the EU. Two trains, both heavily armed, are rushing towards each other.

DIE LINKE calls on Russia not to get provoked into a war. DIE LINKE asks the Ukrainian government to promptly retrieve the army to its bases. A complete arms embargo has to be enforced for Ukraine. This also includes the stop of arms delivery from Russia to the insurgents. Furthermore, DIE LINKE asks the German government to send aid convoys to both regions. Cold, hunger and diseases do not care about declarations of affiliation. A real ceasefire has to be implemented in order to give humanitarian aid to the people."
