Blockupy goes Europe!
In spite of numerous constraints and the bad weather, thousands of activists followed the call of "Blockupy Frankfurt! Resistance in the heart of the European crisis regime" today since early morning. Among them as parliamentary observer was Nicole Gohlke, spokesperson for higher education policy for the faction of DIE LINKE in the Bundestag and member of the DIE LINKE top team for the federal elections. She declares:
The peaceful protest of thousands is a strong sign for a social turnaround in Europe. The blockade of the ECB was a clear statement against the Europe-wide antisocial cutback programs and for solidarity with the peoples of southern Europe. While the banks are presented with billions of dollars, the people of Greece, Portugal, or Spain have no clue how they should pay for food, rent, or health insurance any more. We want the people to be saved, not the banks. The austerity policy of the troika led by Merkel has caused wage dumping, welfare cuts and a huge increase of poverty. This policy must eventually come to an end! The attempt to play off populations against each other will fail. Neither the Greek people nor the people of the
Federal Republic have caused the crisis. This is exactly the reason why tomorrow, on 1st June, thousands of people in Frankfurt and eleven European countries will take to the streets under the motto "People united against the troika" and set an example of international solidarity.
