DIE LINKE Mourns For The Dead Miners
Party chairs of DIE LINKE, Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger, mourn for the victims of the pit disaster in Turkey and offer their condolences to the bereaved. They declare:
We are shocked about the catastrophe in the Turkish coal mine Soma. More than 230 people died. We mourn for the dead miners. We offer our condolences to the bereaved. We wish the injured a speedy recovery. Yet, no one can assess the final extent of the disaster. Our hearts go out to the still buried miners. This terrible accident must not pass without political consequences. Everything suggests that this disaster was caused by the lack of precautionary measures. The governing majority in the Turkish parliament only two weeks ago rejected a safety inspection of Turkish mines. The privately owned mining corporation who runs the mine in Soma since years reduces safety measures to squeeze more profit out of the people and the ground. In Turkey many justly demand to know who is responsible for this disaster. Now, the focus must lie with the rescue and support. We also ask the Federal government to speedily offer concrete assistance mainly in caring for the injured.
