DIE LINKE Regrets Failure of Ecuadorian Yasuní-ITT-Initiative

„The decision of the Ecuadorian government to after all pump up oil in a small part of the Yasuní national park comes as a consequence of the ignorant attitude of the industrial nations with Germany at the front who refused to pay into the trust of the Yasuní-ITT-initiative. There is no reason for the German Government for reproaching the Ecudorian president,“ declares Heike Hänsel, spokesperson for development policy of the parliamentary faction of DIE LINKE. Hänsel further:

„DIE LINKE regrets the failure of the Ecuadorian ITT-initiative. It is fatal that the Federal Government and other governments of the north were not ready to support the compensation fond and thereby protecting the Yasuní park. Before this background the decision of the Ecudorian government to now open the park for oil production is understandable. It was clear from the beginning that the Ecuadorian initiative would only work if it was supported by the industrial nations.

The supposition of the Bundesregierung the Ecuadorian government had never been serious about its initiative has to be rejected. It still remains a global challenge to overcome the fossil age thus also the German Government owes consistent decisions in the context of energy transition.

In the next legislative period DIE LINKE, therefore, will further on support pioneering compensation models, such as the Ecuadorian ITT project, which combine abandoning the production of extractive resources with compensations for failing revenues in favour of the social and economical development of the countries of the south.
