DIE LINKE Welcomes Meeting of “Syria Action Group”

To the meeting of the “Syria Action Group” scheduled for Saturday, member of the Executive Committee of DIE LINKE, Wolfgang Gehrcke, declares:

Everything that can stop the violence in Syria, preserves the unity of the country, leads to the arms delivery by “rebels”, the disbanding of the militia, and the retreat of the Syrian army into the baracks finds support by DIE LINKE. DIE LINKE would not be led astray and adhered to the Kofi Annan plan as the currently only reasonable suggestion. I appreciate the meeting of the “Syria Action Group” in Geneva on June 30. It would have been wiser to involve Iran directly in the Syria talks. This was prevented by the U.S., France, and Great Britain. The declaration of Kofi Annan to inform Iran directly after the meeting does not undo the situation but is reasonable.

The agenda of the “Action Group” includes the probihition of arms delivery to Syria as well as the structure of the interim government. Eventually it must be found a mode for the Syrian people to shape their own future in a democratic way. Germany, as a member of the World Security Council, now has to prove its ability and willingness for autonomous and constructive proposals. The manyfold adjured collaboration of the member states of the European Union so far always ended with the creation of new sanctions and inconsistent positionings towards the proposals of Kofi Annan. The Federal Government is obviously overwhelmed by filling its World Security Council mandate with substance. It could be an important signal if Germany withdrew from the group of the “Friends of Syria”, which is working on a post-Assad economy order. The activities of these “Friends of Syria” were in many ways against international law. Therefore Germany has to end its participation in this group.
