Egypt: Army Wants to Drown Revolution in Blood

„Army and police committed a massacre in Egypt yesterday. I denounce such violent action against protestors“, declares Christine Buchholz, member of the executive board of the party DIE LINKE. She further declares:

The clearing of squares occupied by proponents of toppled president Mursi does not only aim at the destruction of the Muslim Brotherhood but also levels against democracy in Egypt as a whole. The declaration of a state of emergency is the military’s attempt to convert the revolution into a military-led coup d’etat. The state of emergency also threatens the emerging workers‘ movement and the independent trade unions which fight in countless strikes for higher wages and against corrupt managers.

The Egyptian revolution united millions of people in hopes for bread, freedom and social justice. Policy and army want to destroy these hopes. Neither a return to the reign of the military as in Mubaraks‘ time nor a government of Muslim brothers can fulfill the expectations of a broad majority of the population. Only the continuation of the democratic change borne by millions offers a perspective to Egypt.
