Election Results in Israel: Little Hope for Settlement of Middle East Conflict
“The renewed government leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel means a clear rejection of the two state solution as regards foreign policy, but only this would promise hope for the settlement of the Middle East conflict without further militant conflicts. Domestically, Netanyahu supports a continuation of the course of a shameless enrichment of the elites, and that life is defined by an increased governmental racism. Netanyahu has led Israel into isolation and will further drive it into this direction”, says Wolfgang Gehrcke, vice chair of DIE LINKE group in parliament on the results of parliamentary elections in Israel. Gehrcke further:
“The federal government may not leave a doubt now that it not only criticises such politics but has to make it clear that this will further drive Israel into a dead end and will not be accepted as a basis for efforts to solve the Middle East conflict.
Oppositional forces like the Zionist Union of Herzog and Livni, the left Meretz party and the Arabian alliance are confronted with the task to set their mind on a democratic and peaceful alternative programme. If this will be possible remains open.
Palestinian reaction to election results is understandable. President Abbas announced increased international efforts for the regocnition of Palestine and a motion of accession to the International Criminal Court. The federal government now has to support the efforts of President Abbas and acknowledge the state Palestine.”
