End of Violence and International Peace Conference for Syria
"The report of the UN-appointed independent international commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic contains true claims like the one for an end of violence, for a national dialogue and for an international peace conference in Syria. Furthermore it becomes clear, that the Syrian leaders are responsible for the violation of human rights. This has to have legal consequences." declares Gerry Woop, member of the executive board of the DIE LINKE to the report, that will be submitted to the 19th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva coming Monday. Woop continues:
The committee, headed by Brazilian Paulo Pinheiro also listed heavy human rights violations by rebels, especially of the Free Syria Army, which "by extent and organisation were not comparable to those of the state". When armed forces are commanded to shoot children and unarmed demonstrants and wounded prisoners are tortured in hospitals, this touches principles of international rights, which define crimes against humanity as statutory offence. This, like the indiscriminate tank fire against civil housing areas and the killing of soldiers, who refused obedience for criminal actions, have to become subject to legal reprocessing wether after a political change in the country or in front of the International Criminal Court.
