EU Wants to Turn African States into Outposts of Fortress Europe

“The EU is just about to subordinate its whole foreign, economic, and development policy towards African countries to the aim of resisting migration.” declares Niema Movassat, representative in the committee for economic cooperation and development of the parliamentary group DIE LINKE in face of the upcoming EU summit. Movassat further:

“For the EU the Turkey-deal is a glowing example for further deals with Arabic and African states. Thus, it sacrifies the last spark of humaness and human dignity while creating the fortress Europe.

At the EU summit the European heads of states want to adopt a strategy which would turn seven states – among them Ethiopia and Niger – into reliable outposts of this fortress.

The EU will not only upgrade their security personnel but take them as hostage within the so called “less for less” approach: a lack of cooperation will be sanctioned with diminished trade relations as well as the withdrawal of development aid. Such a policy is not only desastrous out of a human rights perspective; it also creates new reasons for flight by strengthening authoritarian regimes and preventing economic development.

If the German government makes itself the accomplice in this policy, it acts against its own principles. Only a few months ago, Müller, minister for economic development, declared in the committee for economic cooperation and development, that he strictly opposes the less for less-approach towards African states.”
