Fearmongering Of The Cruel Kind
EU external border agency Frontex today published the figures for refugees. To this, Cornelia Ernst, Member of European Parliament and member of the committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs as well as candidate of DIE LINKE for the European elections, declares:
According to external border agency Frontex, 42.000 people have been prevented from seeking refuge in the EU. With such figures it is easy to turn sentiments against refugees and asylum seekers right before European elections.
I ask myself something else: How many people escaping from persecution, war, and poverty didn’t reach Europe alive? The EU border agency Frontex remains stuck for an answer about the numbers of casualties.
Another question – how the thousands of bodies in the Mediterranean could be prevented – remains equally open, despite Frontex‘ extended mandate for maritime salvage.
A European foreign policy has to be different from the existing inhuman system of the fortress Europe. Refugees are human beings – only EU law renders them illegal. There must be a turnaround in the EU as soon as possible, to save lifes, end seclusion, and to make Europe a peaceful refuge – internally and externally.
