Federal Government Eventually has to Prize Human Rights Above its Geopolitical Interests

“The prevalent human rights policy of federal government and EU has failed. By ignoring even the severest human rights violations in favour of their own interests, they shield despotic governments while furthermore actively supporting their military and police with arms and equipment. Even though they neglect fundamental and human rights, the federal government still approves of further arms exports to countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar,” says Annette Groth, spokesperson for human rights of DIE LINKE parliamentary group regarding the annual report of Amnesty International on the global human rights situation. Groth further:

“According to Amnesty International the focus of international policy is not on the protection of civil society. Rather, national, geopolitical, and economic interests prevent common actions and further heat conflicts in crisis regions. The report furthermore, clearly shows the numerous human rights violations at the external borders of the EU and in the treatment of refugees.

DIE LINKE backs the criticism by Amnesty International about the end of the sea rescue mission Mare Nostrum and asks for an immediate reintroduction of the sea rescue of refugess in the Mediterranean. The federal government urgently has to work towards a policy change.”
