For the Rule of Law and Democracy – in Poland and Everywhere

“An EU procedure against the dismantling of the state of law and democracy in Poland would be appropriate and welcome. Yet, if the EU at the same time idly watches the activities of the Hungarian Orban government and leads accession negotiations with Erdogans’ Turkey, this is not very credible”, comments Alexander Ulrich, DIE LINKE group spokesperson in the EU committee on today’s meeting of the EU Commission on Poland. Ulrich further:

“The Kaczynski government gained votes with social political promises but now deprives the Constitutional Court of its power and seizes control over the media. This is a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law, which may not be accepted in Europe. If the EU at the same time tolerates open discrimination of minorities in member state Hungary and leads dynamic accession negotiations with Turkey, where government-critical journalists are persecuted and political opponents are in constant danger, this effort for democracy and rule of law are not very credible.”
