Greece has become the stock markets' plaything
Concerning the European governments' undemocratic handling of Greece, the chairwoman of DIE LINKE, Gesine Lötzsch, declares:
The majority in our country disapproves of the German federal government's policy towards Europe. This majority is not willing anymore to carry the costs of the crisis. It is time to make those pay up, who have caused the crisis. But the German federal government refuses to do so. It has handed over the primacy of politics to banks and rating agencies. Chancellor Merkel acts as a debt-collector for banks and rating agencies. This is the main reason for the financial crisis and therefore we will tumble from one crisis into another.
Greece has become the stock markets' plaything. The chancellor has nothing better to do, but to play along. It is a dramatic sign of democratic decay, when a referendum in Greece causes such revolt among the rulers in Europe. No European head of government has ever revolted against banks and stock markets, which have made Greece into a plaything. Calling off the referendum and building a provisional government in Greece show that Greece is governed directly from Brussels. The Greek people are not asked about their opinion anymore.
It is already clear to see, who will be the next victims of banks and stock markets. This game of roulette can only be stopped by the people themselves, against their neoliberal governments. The Euro will not be saved by putting together ever drastic austerity packages. This will only aggravate the crisis. The Euro only has a chance of survival when the financial markets will be deprived of their powers. We need a banking sector regulated by public law, which will serve the interests of the majority of society.
DIE LINKE expresses its solidarity with the people in Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland and all other countries, who do not accept the distribution of wealth from the bottom to the top any longer.
