Merkel’s Change of Mind not Credible

The Chancellor suddenly strikes a moderate tone towards Greece. Against the background of last weeks’ threatening posture this is implausible says Bernd Riexinger, chairman of DIE LINKE. He declares:

“Chancellor Merkel’s change of mind regarding the upcoming elections in Greece to my mind is implausible. After the threatening posture and massive interference during the last weeks no one who experienced the brutal austerity dictate in Greece will buy Merkel’s sympathy. Chancellor Merkel and her policies are primarily responsible for wage and pension reductions, for poverty and extreme cuts in the Greek social security systems.

It’s time for this policy to come to an end – to be unelected. A victory of SYRIZA creates opportunities for Greece and contains hope for the entire Europe. In the long run, our economic development is threatened if our neighbours do not succeed in leaving the crisis.”
