NATO Cannot Conceal Failure Anymore

On occasion of the 11th anniversary of the Afghanistan war from October 7, 2001, Christine Buchholz, member of the Executive Board of DIE LINKE, declares:

The Afghanistan war of the NATO is a desaster without end. The promise of troops withdrawal until 2014 was supposed to be pacifying. But against the backdrop of a growing number of insider attacks against western troops the NATO cannot hide its failure anymore. It has declared to suspend the training of so called Afghan security forces. With this the decisive argumentation of the Federal government for withdrawal in 2014 has been omitted.

The Federal government remains silent on this and whitewashes the situation. DIE LINKE demands clarity over the true plans of the governmental coalition at last. We notice apprehensively that the Federal Intelligence Service out of fear about the unreliability of the armed Afghan organs demands 35.000 NATO soldiers for Afghanistan, among them strike forces, beyond 2014.

The growing number of insider attacks is no reason to prolong the war. To the contrary: The withdrawal of the Federal Armed Forces has to start immediately. The war in Afghanistan solely serves geostrategic interests of the NATO states. Tens of thousands of Afghans paid for this war with their life. So far, more than 3.000 NATO soldiers, among them 53 soldiers of the German armed forces, got killed in this futile war.
