Patriot Stationing: Federal Government Should Respect the Will of the Majority

According to the latest opinion poll by Infratest dimap 59 percent of the Germans think that the deployment of German soldiers and air defense missiles at the Turkish-Syrian border is wrong. “The suspicion of the German population is justified." comments Christine Buchholz, a member of the Executive Board of the party DIE LINKE:

The Turkish government mentioned in one sentence in its letter to NATO, Patriots would neither serve to hedge against military aggression nor to enforce a no-fly zone. Yet, today came out that it claims the power of order to fire the rockets. It is hardly surprising that many people distrust the asseverations from Ankara.

For long, the Turkish government is trying to drag the NATO into the border conflict with Syria. The parliament in Ankara has already given the government authority for an invasion to Syria. With the support of the German army, a Turkish attack on Syria would be more likely.

The Federal Government runs the risk that Germany itself now becomes part of a possible Turkish-Syrian war due to the deployment of Patriot missiles. DIE LINKE asks the Federal Government to respect the will of the majority of the German population and to deny the request of the Turkish government in the NATO Council.
