Referendum in Greece – That's How Democracy Works
The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced that the Greek people will vote on the international creditors’ demands through a referendum. “So goes democracy,” declare the two Party Chairs of DIE LINKE, Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger.
Alexis Tsipras continues to fight decisively against faulty politics in Europe. The stubbornness of Chancellor Merkel and of the institutions that continue to adhere to senseless austerity policies is plunging Europe into a social crisis and could cost taxpayers in Germany up to 84 billion Euros. And yet the Chancellor swore an oath to avoid any harm coming to the people. She is doing the opposite! The continuation of the austerity policies that she, in alliance with the institutions, wants to impose on Greece is a failure. By calling for a referendum Alexis Tsipras found a democratic and prudent answer to the undemocratic state of affairs with the troika. Those who will be affected by the program of cutbacks are now speaking. Pay attention, elites of the EU: so goes democracy! The German chancellor and the institutions’ technocrats must realize finally that the people, not the banks, must decide their own fate. As DIE LINKE we will pressure the Federal Government to respect the Greeks’ democratic decision.
