Stop The Violence!
In view of the unchecked escalation of violence in Ukraine party chairs of DIE LINKE, Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger, approach the public with a plea for a ceasefire. They declare:
In Ukraine rages a military conflict claiming new victims every day. The escalation of the conflict gained a momentum that demands immediate action. A civil war has begun, conflagration is imminent, the European peace is at risk. Now, there can be only one slogan: Stop the violence!
The West and Russia imposed a decision on Ukraine which had to tear the country apart. Both sides had a part in fuelling ethnic and political conflicts in Ukraine and encouraged violent groups. The absurd doctrine that the wars of the 20th century are displaced by interventions linked to political and economic aims always including military options, has failed disastrously and now threatens to set a country in the middle of Europe on fire. When the violence in Ukraine does not stop immediately, the elections of 25th May are prematurely obsolete. Under conditions of war a democratic campaign is impossible.
What Ukraine now first of all needs is an internationally mediated ceasefire. Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama should demonstrate their intention to create peace to the world and finally look directly for a way out of the violence. Kiev, Moscow, Washington, and Brussels have to immediately come together under the roof of the UN and agree on an end of the violence. This involves that the Ukrainian government stops its military operation in the East. Internal riots are no matter of the army. The West has to stop encouraging Kiev to renewed escalations. Russia has to use the Russian speaking media to achieve an end of the violence in the East and South of Ukraine. Only a ceasefire opens a time passage for the orderly execution of the elections on May 25. The goal after the 25th of May must be a democratically elected government of national unity which will be an authorised negotiation partner for implementing a road map for peace for the Ukraine.
