The destruction of the welfare state is followed by the destruction of democracy

Only this week the public order office of the city of Frankfurt/Main told the Occupy activists, their Camp in front of the European Central Bank was permitted until May 23. Today, this camp was prohibited from May 16 to 20. To this, Sahra Wagenknecht, deputy Party Chair of DIE LINKE and Ulrich Wilken, Land chairperson of DIE LINKE Hesse, declare:

Over many month the Occupy campers expressed their protest creatively and peacefully in front of the European Central Bank. Several times they organised orderly large-scale rallies together with partners. Now their verifiably peaceful protest gets criminalised.

The decision of the black-green magistrate is totally incomprehensible. Since provably no danger springs from the Occupy camp one has to conclude that the prohibiton is politically motivated. The protest against European austerity policy near the seat of the European Central Bank, diminishing prospects of whole generations, shall be prevented by all means. On the destruction of the social state ensues the destruction of democracy.

We request the persons in charge of regulatory policy in the black-green city government, to leave the mental trench. The Blockupy alliance many times offered cooperation and further talks. We request the black-green magistrate to finally accept this offer. It does not help to fight the protest against social injustice, the social injustice has to be fought. The protest is thus not only legitimate but urgently needed.
