The so-called European Peace Facility does not strengthen peace
With its decision adopted yesterday the European Union took a big step in the wrong direction regarding the external policies. The establishment of an own off-budget fund allows to finance arms transfers to third countries.
Being transferred these arms are likely to be used in various conflicts and on different sides. Thus, conflicts are fuelled and the population in crisis regions is exposed to even greater risks. The fact to label such a construct as an instrument of peace policy is of almost unrivalled cynicism.
What we need is an active peace policy based on disarmament and dialogue. The financing of arms transfers and military operations is certainly not a contribution to the strengthening of peace.
