Ultimately Stop Chumminess With Erdogan And The AKP
“The German government is asked not to support the minorityphobic and militaristic policy of the Turkish Prime Minister any longer. As long as this chumminess between the German government and the AKP-government under Erdogan exists, the political conditions in Turkey cannot change for the better”, says Sevim Dagdelen, speaker for international relations in Bundestag parliamentary group DIE LINKE, on occasion of the state visit of Recep Tayip Erdogan in Germany. Dagdelen further:
“Already Amnesty International and even the EU-Commission state an alarming human rights situation in Turkey. More than 100 journalists and more than 10 000 oppositionists are in prison at the moment. More than 700 of them are on a hunger strike since weeks. And so is the process against the composer Fazil Say an example for thousands of other trials against government critics in Turkey. The Erdogan-government established with their constitutional reform an authoritarian-islamistic oppressive state, where persecution of oppositionists and minorities by an AKP-controlled justice is everyday’s practice. The frequently invoked democratization within Turkey’s accession process to the EU is nowhere in sight. It is hypocritical to talk about human rights and to support those who train and arm al-Qaida militias, whom are accused of most severe human rights violations also against Kurds, Christians, and Alawi. Chancellor Angela Merkel must request Erdogan to ultimately enter into negotiations with the political prisoners on hunger strike. She is also asked to no longer support Turkey’s policy of escalation in the Middle East especially towards Syria. Instead, Germany should take in Syrian refugees from Turkey and do everything to achieve a negotiated solution.”
