We Mourn For Stéphane Hessel
On the occasion of the demise of Stéphane Hessel party chairs Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger declare:
With Stéphane Hessel a great man has passed away. When he was 24 he joined the French Résistance, was arrested by the Gestapo in France, and eventually deported to Buchenwald. After his liberation he fought for human rights and a better society as a diplomat, author, and poet. Stéphane Hessel’s life and his courage to fight against fascism, war, and injustice was an example for many. To the resistance against the globalised financial capitalism he gave a voice, a message, and stimulus. His words turned indignation into a movement against social and political expropriation. We mourn for Stéphane Hessel. He will be missed.
