Yes to Europe – No to Merkel’s Poisonous Politics

“Democracy achieved a victory in Europe today. The Greek people fought back for a second time against the catastrophic policies of social cutbacks and economic devastation. They said ‘No’ to further austerity, ‘No’ to a false medicine that always worsens the illness,” declares the Party Chair of DIE LINKE, Bernd Riexinger.

There is no doubt that Greece will stay in the Eurozone. Riexinger continues, “Despite enormous outside pressure, the Greek people, who have been living under and suffering the consequences of the austerity policies for years, decided to take no more steps down this path. Nothing legitimizes SYRIZA’s course in the negotiations up until now and further into the future more than this ‘No!’

The negotiators now must return immediately to the table and respect the democratic will of the Greek people. The European Central Bank must grant the requested emergency credit as soon as possible. The pre-referendum period has ended – all of those who in the past few days have incited massive agitations should return to the facts and let objectivity and reason prevail.

The provocation of a Grexit is irresponsible. SYRIZA has always stood for keeping Greece in the Eurozone and simply wants the Greek people to get away from poisonous loans, which is also the most reasonable and best solution for European taxpayers.

The Greeks’ vote of ‘No’ is evidence of a vibrant democracy that has ended the continued administering of a false medicine. The way for new methods of negotiation is now free. DIE LINKE stands in solidarity with SYRIZA.”
